Our Story
Mayerline Flores
The Bolivian Dialysis Assistance League was founded in 2006 by Mayerline “Mayita” Flores, a loving mother, devoted daughter, caring sister, and resilient fighter whose strength and compassion continue to inspire our mission today.
Born in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, Mayita was diagnosed with Wegener’s disease at just 14 years old. This rare and severe condition led to kidney failure, changing the course of her life at a very young age. From that point forward, she spent countless hours undergoing dialysis treatments, enduring physically and emotionally demanding procedures simply to survive. Her journey also included the hope and challenges of a kidney transplant, reflecting both her determination to live and the harsh realities of long-term kidney disease.
Despite these immense challenges, Mayita’s greatest source of strength was her role as a mother. She raised her son, Cristiani, as a single mother, balancing the responsibilities of parenthood with the constant demands of her health. Even while facing exhaustion, hospital visits, and uncertainty, she remained deeply committed to providing love, stability, and guidance to her child. Her ability to care for others while fighting for her own life is a testament to her extraordinary character.
Through her personal experiences, Mayita witnessed firsthand the struggles that dialysis patients face especially those in Bolivia, where access to treatment, medication, and proper care is often limited. Rather than allowing her circumstances to define her, she turned her pain into purpose.
She created this organization with a clear and powerful mission: to support dialysis patients in Bolivia who lack access to life-saving treatment, medication, and care, and to ensure that no one has to face this battle alone.
Mayita passed away on July 28, 2007, at the age of 31, but her legacy lives on through every life we help support. Her story is not only one of perseverance, but of love, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to others values that continue to guide everything we do.
What We Do
Today, The Bolivian Dialysis Assistance League continues Mayita’s mission by providing critical, life-sustaining support to patients in Bolivia who face overwhelming barriers to care. In a country where access to dialysis treatment is limited and often unaffordable, many individuals are left without the resources they need to survive. We exist to bridge that gap.
Our organization focuses on supporting patients in need at Hospital San Juan de Dios in Santa Cruz, Bolivia and Hospital de Niños Dr. Mario Ortiz Suárez, where many low-income families rely on public healthcare services that are often underfunded and overstretched.
Through the generosity of our community and supporters, we help provide essential dialysis supplies, medications, and financial assistance to patients who would otherwise go without treatment. Dialysis is not optional it is a life-saving necessity and even missing a few sessions can have severe consequences. Unfortunately, many patients in Bolivia must make the impossible choice between paying for treatment or meeting basic daily needs.
We work closely with local hospitals and healthcare providers to identify the most urgent needs and ensure that support reaches those who need it most. Our efforts not only help sustain treatment but also aim to restore dignity, hope, and stability to patients and their families during incredibly difficult times.
In addition to direct patient support, we raise awareness about kidney disease and the disparities in access to care. Through fundraising events, community outreach, and partnerships, we continue to expand our impact and honor Mayita’s legacy.
Every contribution whether through donations, event participation, or spreading awareness plays a vital role in saving lives. Together, we are not just providing treatment; we are giving patients a chance at a longer, healthier future.
